My Background

I’m Alex J. Matthews, a rigger, automation tech, and carpenter who got my start in stage management. These days, I take drawings and turn them into solid, reliable builds: handling materials, hardware, budgets, crews, and shop flow from start to finish.

While Rigging at theaters, arenas, and amphitheaters, I am experienced in Unistrut and truss to chain motors, Spotlines, and Creative Conners automation, ensuring every move runs smoothly and safely. I’ve worked in arena and proscenium spaces, including the AEG Presents at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, Miller Auditorium, the Utah Shakespeare Festival (where I handled rep changeovers and automation), and Western Michigan University’s School of Theatre & Dance.

My background in stage management keeps me grounded, so timelines stay realistic and paperwork stays clean, but at the heart of what I do is building trust: clear load paths, neat cable runs, airtight checklists, and crews that go home safer than they arrived. If it hangs, rolls, or flies, I make it work and I make it safe.

Me Outside of Work

Cooking

I love every aspect of cooking: exploring new recipes, ingredients, and ideas from around the world. Every year, my family rents an industrial kitchen, and we spend 7 hours baking cookies together. It's a lot of Greeks in the kitchen.

Travel

Traveling has been my passion for as long as I can remember with trips to 13 different countries and 23 of the 50 states (so far). When I went to Iceland, I had the experience of snorkeling at the Divide of the North American and European tectonic plates with my mother.

Hiking

One of my favorite parts of travel is getting off the beaten path. I love exploring the great outdoors, and it never fails to fuel my passions and helps me find my next adventure.
