Written by Marcus Gardley and inspired by The House of Bernarda Alba, this play is set in 1813 New Orleans, a city on the brink of change. It follows Beartrice Albans, a free Black woman navigating power, love, and survival in a society transformed by the Louisiana Purchase. The story explores themes of freedom, inheritance, race, and womanhood, blending poetic language with sharp humor and emotional depth.
This production at Western Michigan University brought these themes to life with a rich combination of period design, music, and movement, presenting a rewarding challenge from a stage management and production coordination perspective.
